Entry, Descent and Landing for Exploration (Orbiting Lidar) Precision Landing and Hazard Avoidance for Exploration (Flash and Navigational Lidar), Mars and Lunar Rover lidars for Surface, Atmosphere and Mineralogical Studies

Lidars are becoming more frequent on Exploration missions. From miniaturized systems (few hundred grams) capable of measuring distance from Asteroids (HERA mission), to scanning imaging lidars for RVS (RVS3000), the maturing of laser technology enables the replacement of outdated microwave systems. The exploration of Mars and Moon, shall be driven with lidar equipped rovers as well as Lidar equipped landers for precision Landing. The technologies for these “smaller” systems is not different from their larger Lidars presented in previous sessions, but the applications and the challenges are countless.
